Oil shale is a type of rock that contains a complex form of organic matter. It is found in many places around the world but is not widely used commercially. Producing oil from shale is more expensive than from regular oil because of its chemical composition. Refining shale oil into usable products is also costly. The main product obtained from shale oil is asphalt. Most commercial operations for oil shale are located outside the United States.
