The article discusses the achievements and limitations of tripartism in South African mining, focusing on occupational health and safety. It looks at both statutory (legal) and non-statutory (informal) tripartite forums where stakeholders discuss issues. The authors highlight the importance of the International Labour Organization in promoting social compacts and dialogue. While formal tripartite structures are essential, key discussions often happen outside of them. The practice of tripartism is crucial for creating a more inclusive and equal society in South Africa.
