Boosting crop yields in Pakistan: Irrigation, not tractors, is the key to unlocking higher cropping intensity.
The research looked at why farmers in Pakistan grow fewer crops than they could, compared to farmers in India. They found that having enough water to irrigate the land is the main reason for this difference. Having tractors helps somewhat, but having good access to water matters more. The study also showed that not having the right types of seeds for planting different crops at different times is a problem. By improving water access and developing better seed varieties, farmers in Pakistan could grow 30% more crops than they do now.
