Ancient Assyrian civilization's legacy lives on despite empire's fall.
Assyria was a powerful ancient state in Mesopotamia, centered around the Tigris River. It started in Ashur in the third millennium BCE and ruled Western Asia in the 8th and 7th centuries. The Babylonians and Medes ended Assyrian rule between 616 and 609, but some aspects of Assyrian civilization continued until the Parthian period.
