Neurosurgery's staggering environmental toll: 24.5 kg CO2 per operation, catalyzing urgent sustainability innovations in healthcare.
The study looked at how much waste and carbon dioxide emissions come from neurosurgery operations at a hospital in England. They found that each neurosurgical operation creates about 8.91 kilograms of waste, mainly from disposable equipment, and results in 24.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. In a year, around 1300 neurosurgery operations produce a total of 11,584.4 kilograms of waste and 31,859 kilograms of carbon dioxide. This information helps us understand the environmental impact of medical procedures and the potential for making neurosurgery more eco-friendly by reducing waste and emissions.
