Africa's groundwater recharge secrets unlocked, paving the way for reliable water supply
Groundwater recharge in Africa varies based on factors like climate, topography, vegetation, and geology. By analyzing existing data, researchers identified 15 different types of recharge landscapes across the continent. Wet areas are better at turning rainfall into groundwater, while dry areas have more variability in recharge rates. However, there are still unknown factors affecting recharge in some regions, especially in drylands. This study shows that global datasets can help understand groundwater recharge patterns in Africa, but there are limitations in explaining all variations.
