Transportation of municipal waste consumes up to 92% of energy potential.
Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) can be made from trash, and this study looked at how much energy is used to transport and process different types of waste in Poland. They found that making RDF from mixed waste uses the most energy, while making it from bulky or separated waste uses less. Transportation uses up most of the energy, especially for mixed waste. Using bigger trucks for transport is important to save energy.
