China's rapid urbanization and sprawl are linked to climate warming. Four major cities were studied to see how urban sprawl affects climate change. Shanghai is compact, but all cities experienced sprawl to some extent. Arable land can help cool temperatures, while fragmented built-up areas contribute most to warming.
