Virtual reality wheelchair training shows promise for improving driving skills
The study aimed to see how well people could drive a powered wheelchair in a simulator compared to real life. They created virtual versions of three real driving courses and had participants try them out in both the simulator and real world. The results showed that expert drivers with neurological disorders performed similarly in both settings, with slightly more collisions in the simulator on the hardest course. Completion times were longer in the simulator for easier courses but similar for the hardest one. People felt more mentally strained in the simulator, but overall, they adapted well to the virtual environment. This suggests that simulators could be a useful tool for training wheelchair users.
