Gulf of Lions fish body condition linked to population density shifts.
Changes in the Gulf of Lions have affected the condition and density of demersal fish species since 1994. A study found that the environment and small pelagic fish community shifts between 2006 and 2009 impacted the demersal fish community as well. The body condition of species like hake varied significantly, with adult condition influencing recruitment positively despite being negatively affected by population density. This suggests that hake body condition may play a role in promoting higher recruitment at lower densities. Further research is needed to see if similar effects occur in other demersal species.
