The article examines how European pharmaceutical companies turn research into patents without bias. They use a new method called a copula approach to analyze the relationship between research investment and patent outcomes. This method doesn't need instrumental variables and is more accurate than traditional methods. If endogeneity is ignored, the importance of research in creating patents is underestimated in the European pharmaceutical industry.
