Newly Discovered 18th-Century Icon Unveils Lost Vyatka Iconography Tradition
The researchers found an old icon called "The Intercession of the Theotokos” in 1976. The icon was in bad shape, but after restoring it, they uncovered the names of the Kuznetsov family who painted it in 1734. The painting shows a famous religious celebration featuring Mary and reflects different Russian art styles. The restored icon is one of the few known works from the Vyatka region in the early 18th century. This discovery sheds light on the local painting traditions from that time period.
