Novel strip intercropping boosts crop yield and food security in South Africa.
Improved cowpea varieties were tested in strip intercropping with maize in Bela-Bela, South Africa. Strip intercropping outperformed traditional mixed intercropping, increasing yield and land use efficiency. IT82E-16, IT86D-1010, TVu 13464, and IT87K-499-35 showed the best results in strip intercropping compared to Glenda. This new method can enhance crop diversity, food security, and nutrition in the region.
