New flood map technology predicts risks for Bihar, India's river communities.
The goal of the study was to map flood-prone areas along the Burhi Gandak River in Bihar, India, to help manage emergencies. By analyzing 50 years of data, the researchers predicted flood levels for different return periods. They found that the Gumbel distribution was the best fit for extreme flow calculations. Using a hydraulic model called HEC-RAS, they identified areas at risk of flooding and created detailed flood maps showing water depth and flow velocity.
