Genetic study reveals close relationship between sweet sorghum types in Burkina Faso.
Sweet grain sorghum in Burkina Faso was studied alongside other sorghum types to understand their genetic relationship. Using nuclear microsatellite markers, researchers found significant genetic diversity within each sorghum type. Sweet grain sorghum showed lower heterozygosity values compared to the other types. The genetic differentiation between sweet grain sorghum and sweet stalk sorghum was significant, suggesting they are genetically distinct. However, overall, the three types of sorghum showed close genetic proximity, with differences likely related to physiological and biochemical factors. These findings can help in better managing the genetic resources of sweet grain sorghum.
