Satellite data reveals alarming agricultural land loss in northern Iran.
Land use in the Gilan Province, Iran was studied using satellite data from 1990 to 2015. The researchers created maps showing changes in gardens, agriculture, residential areas, barren lands, and pastures. They found that a lot of agricultural and forest land was turned into residential areas, especially in the eastern part of the province. Factors like economics, governance, demographics, and nature all played a role in these changes. The study showed that using satellite images is a useful way to track and manage land use changes.
