Crop phenology crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
Agriculture plays a big role in greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers in Switzerland studied how peas and maize affect CO2, N2O, and CH4 levels in the air. They found that environmental factors like sunlight and soil moisture were more important than how long the crops had been growing. Both crops absorbed CO2 but released N2O early in the season. Peas lost 1.4 kg of N2O-N per hectare, while maize lost 4.8 kg. The N2O emissions were higher than expected, showing the need to manage nitrogen better for sustainable farming.
