Code smells are signs of bad code design. The study looked at over 21,000 code reviews in Java projects to see if code reviews help reduce code smells. They found that active code reviews can lower the severity of code smells. However, in most cases where code smells improved, it was because reviewers asked for changes unrelated to code smells.
