Double fortified salt combats widespread vitamin deficiencies in India
Micronutrient malnutrition is a big problem in India, especially for kids and women. Many people lack important vitamins and minerals like iodine, iron, vitamin B12, and zinc. To help with this, scientists have been adding these nutrients to salt, which is a common food ingredient. By fortifying salt with iodine, India has successfully reduced iodine deficiency disorders. They also tried adding iron to salt, which showed positive results, but it wasn't widely adopted. Later, a double fortified salt with both iron and iodine was developed. This could be a simple and effective way to improve people's nutrition and health.
