Goods-market frictions could significantly impact global trade and welfare
The study looked at how difficulties in buying and selling goods can affect international trade. By including these market frictions in their model, the researchers found that it can make trade more responsive to changes in tariffs, but also reduce the overall welfare benefits. In their simulations, removing these search costs increased welfare by 1% and had similar effects on trade as a 10% tariff.
