Interspecific hybridization between mung beans and adzuki beans was successfully achieved for the first time. The researchers created two hybrids by culturing embryos from mung beans on artificial medium. These hybrids flowered early and continuously but did not produce any seeds. The chromosome pairing analysis showed an average of 2.39 pairs at metaphase I.
