Spacing levels of separation more closely in a task where people judge the distance between circles improves sensitivity in discriminating separations. By testing critical separation levels with different spacing, researchers found that when separation levels are closer together, people are better at telling the difference between them. This suggests that the way we perceive separation is influenced by how many "separation fields" are between points, with more closely spaced levels leading to denser separation fields and better discrimination.
