Commit Behavior Boost Transforms Student Productivity and Collaboration
The study "If in Doubt, Try Three" aimed to help students learn good version control skills by practicing regular commits in their school assignments. Students were encouraged to make at least three commits in the first week, write clear commit messages in the second week, and then follow a commit plan in the final week. Comparisons before, during, and after the process showed that students improved their commit behavior, such as making more commits, starting assignments earlier, and writing better commit messages. This process helped students in the test group perform better than their classmates and those in the previous year. Students found the extra effort of thoughtful commits to be beneficial for their work and had a positive attitude towards developing better commit behavior.
