Higher humus content in soil boosts crop yield and sustainability.
The researchers compared two types of soils in the Tambov region to see how organic matter and soil structure differed. They found that the meadow-chernozem soil had more humus and humic acids due to extra moisture and post-harvest residues. This soil also had higher levels of easily degradable organic matter and better aggregate and microaggregate states compared to leached chernozem soil. Overall, the meadow-chernozem soil had more favorable indicators of organic matter and soil structure.
