Zooplankton migration disrupted by changing lake conditions, impacting ecosystem balance.
The study found that in Lake Superior, zooplankton changed their behavior suddenly in June 2019. They stopped moving up and down in the water column at night, which they usually do. This change happened when the water in the lake shifted from being cold on top to being the same temperature throughout. The researchers think this change in behavior was because the plankton could now find food deeper in the water. This change happened quickly, in just a few hours.
