Proper sampling strategy crucial for accurate plant species distribution models.
The way we collect data about plant species affects how accurately we can predict their distribution. A study in Italy simulated different sampling strategies for two virtual plant species. They found that species with wide environmental tolerances are best modeled with data collected evenly across the environment. For species with narrow tolerances, no single sampling strategy stood out as the best. The study shows that understanding a species' ecology can help us choose the right sampling strategy for accurate predictions.
