Switching to High-Calorific Coal Can Slash CO2 Emissions from Power Plants
This article looks at ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal power plants by analyzing CO₂ emissions based on the type of coal used. The researchers studied coal data from three power plants in Korea from 2014 to 2021. They found that using high-calorific coal produces lower CO₂ emissions compared to low-calorific coal. However, using more high-calorific coal may lead to higher particulate matter emissions, so air pollution control measures need to be improved. Additionally, high-calorific coal is more expensive, so changes in coal taxes are needed to make it more competitive.
