Energy Efficiency Boost Undermines Steel Industry's Emissions Cuts
The iron and steel industry, a major energy user in China, aims to understand if energy-saving techniques truly save energy due to something called the rebound effect. By looking at 2000-2019 data, researchers found that improved technology raises energy efficiency. The eastern part of China leads in efficiency, followed by central areas; the west falls behind. While energy efficiency goes up, the industry still uses more energy overall (rebound effect of 0.4297) because of changes in factors and output growth. Different regions show varied rebound effects. To reduce this effect and cut down on energy and carbon use, policies are suggested.
