Polar Vortex Weakening Threatens Arctic Ozone Layer Recovery
The Arctic stratosphere in winter 2021–2022 had a strong polar vortex and lots of polar stratospheric clouds. Two sudden stratospheric warming events in late February and March weakened the vortex and prevented major ozone depletion. The first event only affected the upper stratosphere, while the second one reached the middle and lower stratosphere. Both events changed the circulation patterns in the Arctic stratosphere, leading to warming in some areas and weakening of the polar vortex.
