Forest disturbances in Hainan Island nature reserves peaked in the 1990s.
Forest disturbance monitoring in Hainan Island's nature reserves from 1987 to 2020 showed that most disturbances happened in the 1990s and early 21st century. The coastal zone had more forest loss than the internal areas, with 97.12 km2 disturbed in the coastal zone and 63.02 km2 in the internal area. National nature reserves had 28.39 km2 disturbed, while provincial reserves had 131.75 km2 disturbed. Forest ecological reserves had the most disturbance at 102.96 km2, followed by marine coastal reserves at 36.99 km2, wildlife reserves at 10.22 km2, and wild plant reserves at 9.96 km2. These findings can help manage and plan nature reserves in Hainan Island.
