Intravenous fish oil could prevent liver disease in patients on long-term nutrition support.
In this research, scientists wanted to see how giving patients with intestinal problems a special fish oil type of nutrition affected their body. They studied eight patients who needed nutrition delivered through veins. First, they didn't include fish oil for 8 weeks, then added 25% fish oil for another 8 weeks. They found that the fish oil raised the levels of healthy omega-3 fats found in the patients' blood. These fats led to fewer harmful substances in the body that can cause inflammation. The fish oil also seemed to protect the liver and reduce inflammation. So, using fish oil in the nutrition could be helpful for patients needing this type of special nutrition.
