Solar-powered chillers revolutionize mall cooling, saving energy and costs.
The study evaluated a solar/gas absorption cooling system for malls in Barranquilla, Colombia. They used ammonia and lithium nitrate to chill water for air conditioning. The system's performance was analyzed based on solar energy and natural gas. The main limitation was the available area for solar collectors. Mall two met 100% of its cooling needs with two chillers and 2210 m2 of solar collectors. Mall one covered 83% of its cooling load with two chillers, while mall three only covered 35% with one chiller due to limited collector space. The chillers achieved a maximum COP of 0.64 and SCOP of 0.41.
