Distributed ledgers fall short in replacing trusted parties in key systems.
Distributed ledger technology is being used to create secure and transparent systems without the need for a trusted third party. However, in many cases, participants still need to trust each other, limiting the ledger's ability to fully replace a trusted party. The study introduces criteria for when a ledger can replace a trusted party and evaluates various use cases, showing that trust is often still necessary despite using a ledger.
