New sorghum study reveals potential for improved crop breeding programs in Burkina Faso.
Three types of sorghum in Burkina Faso were studied to identify unique traits. 42 genotypes were tested for 20 traits, showing high variability within each type. Sweet grain sorghum and sweet stalk sorghum are more similar. Sweet grain sorghum has longer sowing-heading cycle, thicker stems, more tillers, wider panicles, and lower sugar content. Genotype plays a bigger role in trait variability than sorghum type. Genotypes are grouped independently of sorghum type, with sweet grain sorghum in one group. These findings can help improve sorghum breeding programs.
