New Tidal Power Plant in South Africa to Slash Fossil Fuel Reliance
Tidal power plants using helical turbines can generate electricity from ocean tides, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. In Esikhawini, a tidal plant with helical turbines could produce 1.4 MW of power, with each turbine generating 23.75 kW. The turbines were designed using blade element momentum theory and modeled with an average tidal velocity of 1.5 m/s.
