Traditional political parties' failures fuel rise of populism in post-communist countries.
The article discusses how political elites in Eastern Europe have helped spread populism. Populism is seen as a result of democracy being in trouble, not the cause. Traditional political parties not doing their job well and lacking strong leaders have made people more interested in populist ideas. When national and European institutions don't handle crises well, it gives populists a chance to gain support. People in Western democracies are losing trust in political institutions, especially in newer democracies.
