Diverse cultural consumption boosts social advantage, bridging inequality gaps in Poland.
Social capital, which is the benefit of having strong social connections, is not evenly distributed in society. A study in Poland found that people who enjoy a variety of cultural activities tend to have better social connections. Social status and the types of relationships people have also play a role in how much social capital they have. Interestingly, having close relationships with family members can actually decrease overall social capital, while being part of organizations can increase it. Surprisingly, having diverse cultural tastes seems to benefit those with lower social status more than those with higher status.
