Revolutionary Manureshed Management Improves Water Quality in Livestock-Intensive Regions
Manureshed management can help improve water quality by matching areas with excess livestock manure to areas with crop demand. In the Susquehanna River Basin, scenarios were tested to see how this management approach could reduce nutrient pollution. Phosphorus-based manureshed management was more effective than nitrogen-based management in improving water quality. By applying manure based on crop nutrient demand and avoiding vulnerable landscapes, significant reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus losses were achieved. Overall, manureshed management was found to be more successful in improving local stream quality in areas with high livestock density.
