Rainfall and Flood Return Periods Misaligned, Risk of Extreme Events Increases.
The article explores how rainfall and floods are related in the Pineios catchment in Greece. By using different methods like rainfall frequency analysis and flood frequency analysis, the researchers found that a 50-year flood doesn't always match a 50-year rainfall event. In fact, a 50-year flood in the area corresponds to a rainfall return period of about 110 years. This means that the assumption of equal return periods for rainfall and floods doesn't hold true in this region.
