Invasive lupine set to thrive in Europe as climate warms.
Plant phenology, or the timing of plant life cycle events, is influenced by temperature and day length. Invasive legume Lupinus polyphyllus adapts its phenology with latitude. The study found that as you move north in Europe, the timing of flowering and fruiting of Lupinus polyphyllus shifts later, while the temperature needed for these phases decreases. This suggests that the invasion of Lupinus polyphyllus will likely increase in northern Europe due to climate warming. To control invasive species, mowing dates may need to be adjusted by about one week per 500 km in countries with large latitudinal extents.
