Optimizing maize canopy structure boosts yield potential under climate change.
Maize cultivars were studied to improve canopy structure and light absorption for higher yields. Researchers found that selecting cultivars with optimized canopy structure in the middle-upper canopy and two leaves below the ear position can increase grain production. These areas had larger leaf photosynthetic potential and better light interception compared to the lower canopy. By choosing cultivars that enhance the middle-upper canopy, farmers can improve maize yield in changing climates.
