Single objects enough to categorize scenes in a blink of an eye!
The study tested if recognizing just one object in a scene can help us quickly figure out what kind of place it is, like a kitchen or a highway. Participants looked at pictures with only one object and could still tell the scene category in just 50 milliseconds. Certain objects were found to be more helpful for categorizing scenes based on how often they appear in specific environments. People's opinions on how common and specific an object is for a scene category were more important for fast scene categorization than objective measures from image databases. This shows that single objects can give us clues about the type of scene we are looking at if they are commonly found in that environment.
