Employees Dehumanized by Organizations Lose Their Humanity, Impacting Wellbeing
This study looks at how feeling dehumanized at work can lead employees to think of themselves as less human. The researchers suggest that when people feel their organization treats them in an inhuman way, they are more likely to put on a fake smile (called surface acting) to deal with their emotions. This emotional fakery, in turn, makes them see themselves as more like machines than humans. Through three studies, the researchers found that when employees feel their workplace treats them like robots, they show more surface acting, which then leads to them viewing themselves as less human. In simpler terms, feeling dehumanized at work can push people to pretend to be happy, but in the end, it can make them see themselves more like robots than human beings.
