Newly Discovered Microorganisms Could Revolutionize Water Purification Methods
Microorganisms from highly magnetic soils in Russia were studied for their ability to resist and remove manganese, a harmful pollutant. Nine strains of manganese-oxidizing microorganisms and two strains of iron-oxidizing microorganisms were tested. Some strains showed high resistance to manganese, with maximum growth at 10 mmol/L concentration. These findings suggest that these microorganisms could be used to clean water with high manganese levels.
