Cover crops and no-till planting reduce soil erosion risk for cotton.
Cover crops and no-till planting can help prevent soil erosion in cotton fields, but their impact on profits and risk for farmers is uncertain. A study in Tennessee found that planting cover crops on tilled cotton fields can decrease the need for nitrogen fertilizer and yields. However, the effect of cover crops on optimal nitrogen rates and yields for untilled cotton depends on the cover crop type. Risk-neutral farmers would choose tilling with no cover crops, but as risk aversion increases, no-till planting without cover crops becomes optimal. This research helps farmers understand the profitability and risk of using cover crops and no-till planting to make better production decisions.
