New Study Shows Improved Water Management Techniques for Sustainable Agriculture.
The researchers estimated irrigation return flow in sandy-loam soil by using a water balance approach. They set up lysimeters in a pea crop field and measured soil moisture at different depths. Evapotranspiration was calculated using a specific equation. The deep percolation losses were determined using the water balance method and were found to be similar to observed values. The difference between observed and calculated values was 7.65%. The study showed that locally constructed lysimeters can be effectively used in water balance studies when combined with soil moisture monitoring devices.
