Weed-free rice fields in Nepal boost yields and profits significantly.
Grain yield in dry direct seeded rice is often limited by weeds. A study in Nepal tested different seedbed preparation and weed management methods. The type of seedbed preparation didn't affect grain yield, but weedy plots had significantly lower yields. Herbicidal treatments, specifically Pendimethalin followed by Bispyribac sodium, were the most cost-effective and efficient in managing weeds in dry direct seeded rice. This method resulted in the highest net returns and benefit-cost ratio compared to other weed management practices tested.
