Over half of Russia's land dominated by soils suitable for agriculture.
The researchers analyzed the soil cover of Russia using a new classification system on a 1:2.5 M scale map. They identified 24 soil orders, including natural and human-modified soils. The map shows zonal patterns in the East European Plain and diverse soils in Central and Eastern Siberia. The new map includes previously absent soil orders like cryozems and hydrometamorphic soils. The majority of Russia's land is covered by soils suitable for agriculture, with Podzols, Gleysols, Luvisols, and Histosols being the most common types. Some soils have limited use but are important for the environment and need protection, like lithosols and Regosols.
