Unlocking Plant Enzyme Key to Boosting Crop Yield and Nutrition
Leaf senescence involves breaking down amino acids to recycle nutrients, with key reactions happening in mitochondria. Proline and arginine metabolism are linked through the intermediate P5C. In Arabidopsis, ProDH and P5CDH enzymes are crucial for proline breakdown. Mutants lacking P5CDH showed faster metabolic changes during senescence, accumulating more P5C and proline. Reduced ProDH activity was observed in P5CDH mutants, suggesting P5C levels influence amino acid pathways during senescence.
