The geopotential height at 500 hPa affects weather in Iraq. A study looked at how this height changed during a rain event in January 2013. When the height decreased, heavy rain fell in Kirkuk. This decrease in height indicates unstable weather. The rain was caused by a trough stretching from Europe to the Mediterranean, bringing moisture and instability to Iraq.
